Hypocrisy Series. Posting #1.
Our honourable President condemned the blasts in the Samjhauta Express and the Prime Minister promised to punish the guilty; “The Law will takes its own course” as they always say. The President may condemn the blasts, but he will think twice, nay, several times before signing his agreement if the terrorists who are responsible for the killings are sentenced to death. We have seen that in the past, and we will see that in the future.
The government has an interest in keeping the terrorists alive; they can be traded when the government gets into a tight corner, as was the case when Azhar Mahmoud was released in order to ensure the release of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane at Kandahar.
Another case in point is that of Afzal Guru whose death sentence has been re-confirmed by the Supreme Court, but still the President is sitting over it, and will continue to do so till the UP elections are over. Does it not prove that the President is behaving as a politician, favouring Congress? But the President is an honourable man ! I wonder why he could not sit over the ‘Office of Profit’ bill when it was sent to him for the second time. He was within his rights to defer signing the bill indefinitely. But he had to consider his own interest, of course. So, he took, as he is now taking, the path of least resistance. The President undeniably is an honourable man. Studying the present political scenario, I daresay that if Gandhiji was assassinated today by a Muslim, the assassin’s death sentence would have been deferred till the elections were over.
We, therefore, can expect that terrorists responsible for the blasts will be spared their lives, as was the case of Azhar Mahmoud and his followers and will be the case of Afzal Guru, and clemency withheld till the elections are over.
